Ever a Surprise

Enchantments abound in Beast’s castle! Some cards discard other cards to do their effects, some cards can play themselves after being discarded, and some cards are triggered by discards. The Belle and Beast cards both help the discarding and help each other, and Petals of the Rose helps sort the deck.

- Smash Up: Disney Edition rulebook

Beauty and the Beast is one of the 8 factions from the Smash Up: Disney Edition set.

Beauty and the Beast discard cards for effects, with several cards becoming playable when they are discarded from your hand.

Their complexity rating is: Low-Medium.

Other factions from the same set: Aladdin, Big Hero 6, Frozen, Mulan, The Lion King, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Wreck-It Ralph.

Clarifications[]

Here are the official clarifications as they appear in the Smash Up: Disney Edition rulebook:

Be Our Guest: These only work once per your turn, no matter how often you fulfill the conditions.

Beast, Cogsworth, Gaston, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts and Chip, This Provincial Town: Discarding a card for one of these cards does not count toward any other card’s prerequisites; a separate card must be discarded for each one. But even one discarded card triggers all cards that trigger from a discard (e.g. Be Our Guest, Enchanted Castle).

Break the Curse, Discover the Library, Enchanted Objects, Ever a Surprise: Each of these can play itself if discarded from the hand for any reason, whether another ability requires a discard from the hand, or because the hand is too large in the Draw 2 Cards phase. They are not triggered after being discarded from a scoring base or the deck.

Break the Curse: Only characters on the base when the ability is resolved get the +1; those played or moved there later do not.

Gaston: The increase to the breakpoint only lasts while Gaston is on the base.

Lumiere: You can just discard a card without playing the extra character, since extra plays are optional.

Petals of the Rose: These are resolved each time their trigger happens, not just once per turn.

Suggested Disney Matchups and Tips for Play[]

To help beginner players, the Smash Up: Disney Edition set gave a few tips and tricks to play this faction, as well as partner recommendations within the set.

Good beginning partner factions: Big Hero 6, Frozen

Tips for play:

  • When you discard a card to activate an ability, discard one that then plays itself, if you can.
  • Belle, Mrs. Potts and Chip, and Be Our Guest can replenish your hand.
  • Belle and Beast help each other, but their talents are useful enough that you shouldn’t hesitate to use them alone.

Mechanics[]

Beauty and the Beast are all about discarding cards from your hand to get various benefits. But the neat thing is they have cards that you want to discard (Enchanted Objects, Break the Curse, Discover the Library and Ever a Surprise) because those become playable for free when that happens, so you're not simply losing a card for a benefit.

FAQ[]

Questions on Belle[]

Q: Is there a limit to the number of cards in my hand?

A: Yes, the rules of the Smash Up: Disney Edition set are actually missing it, but there is a limit of ten cards though only during your Draw 2 Cards phase, which is when you draw two cards before the end of your turn. At any other time, you can have more than ten cards in hand and it is fine. You'll just wait until your next Draw 2 Cards phase to discard down to ten.

Rule: You wait until your Draw 2 Cards phase to discard down to 10; if your hand is bigger than 10 at other times of the game, that’s okay.

Q: I draw cards, either from playing Belle on Beast's base, or from using its talent, but it will bring my hand to more than ten cards. Do I immediately discard down to 10 cards? Or do I stop drawing once I have exactly ten cards?

A: You draw cards normally, disregarding the limit. You don't discard any card until your Draw 2 Cards phase. At that point, you will indeed need to draw two cards and discard down to 10 if you have more than 10. That's the only moment where you must discard down to 10. At any other time, you keep your hand of cards.

Rule: You wait until your Draw 2 Cards phase to discard down to 10; if your hand is bigger than 10 at other times of the game, that’s okay.

With AEG's Smash Up sets[]

Q: How does this interact with the Grimms’ Blessing?

A: Grimms’ Blessing is treated as having the name "Beast", so Belle allows you to draw up to three cards when played on Grimms’ Blessing's base.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Questions on Beast[]

Q: If I use its talent, do I have to discard a card?

A: No. It's a "Do X to do Y" type of ability, so while it doesn't say "you may", doing X is actually optional![1]

Rule: When a card says "Do X to do Y" or "You may do X to do Y", doing X is optional in both cases.

Q: If Beast's ability is cancelled, are the +1 power counters placed by its ability removed?

A: No. When you place a +1 power counter, it's a definitive effect (like drawing cards, if you play Minn-Erva, you're not going to discard the cards you drew if Minn-Erva's ability is cancelled), so the +1 power counters remain even if the card that placed them has its ability cancelled. Besides, how are you going to keep track of which +1 power counters were added by Beast's ability and which ones were not (e.g. if you're playing Beauty and the Beast Big Hero 6 or Beauty and the Beast The Lion King)? That would be very cumbersome.

Rule: Cancelling (or losing) an effect does not necessarily undo what it did.

Q: If Beast is removed from play (e.g. destroyed, returned, etc.), is the +1 power counter placed by its ability on Belle removed?

A: No. When you place a +1 power counter, it's a definitive effect, so the +1 power counters remain even if the card that placed them is removed from play (like drawing cards, if you play Minn-Erva, you're not going to discard the card you drew if Minn-Erva is destroyed). On the other hand, if a card is removed while it had +1 power counters, only the +1 power counters on it are removed, but that's because a card that leaves play loses all its attachments. Besides, how are you going to keep track of which +1 power counters were added by Beast's ability and which ones were not (e.g. if you're playing Beauty and the Beast Big Hero 6 or Beauty and the Beast The Lion King)? That would be very cumbersome.

Rule: Removing a card from play does not necessarily undo what it did.

With AEG's Smash Up sets[]

Q: How does this interact with the Grimms’ Blessing?

A: Grimms’ Blessing is treated as having the name "Belle", so you would place a +1 power counter on both Beast and Grimms’ Blessing when Beast is played on Grimms’ Blessing's base. However, the counter on Grimms’ Blessing wouldn't do anything because Grimms’ Blessing is not a minion and no cards say what the counter does.

Rule: If the card with +1 power counters is an action, the ability of the card will tell you what the +1 power counters do. Otherwise, the +1 power counters do nothing.

Questions on Cogsworth[]

Q: If I use its talent, do I have to discard a card?

A: No. It's a "Do X to do Y" type of ability, so while it doesn't say "you may", doing X is actually optional![1]

Rule: When a card says "Do X to do Y" or "You may do X to do Y", doing X is optional in both cases.

Q: If I discard a card that plays itself that way (e.g. Enchanted Objects, Break the Curse, etc.), do I play it as an extra card before or after playing Cogsworth's extra action?

A: It depends. Those cards can only be played after you've finished resolving Cogsworth's talent. But Cogsworth's extra action can either be played immediately, or "banked" to be played later during your Play Cards phase. If you choose to play the extra action immediately, then the extra action will be resolved before Enchanted Objects, Break the Curse, etc. If you choose to "bank" the extra action, then you'll first need to resolve Enchanted Objects, Break the Curse, etc. and any other card reactions as well, e.g. Petals of the Rose, before being able to play the extra action.

Rule: During your Play Cards phase, you can play extra minions and actions at any time or not at all.

Rule: Extra cards can always be played immediately.

Rule: Check the Card Resolution Order.

Questions on Lumiere[]

Q: If I use its talent, do I have to discard a card?

A: No. It's a "Do X to do Y" type of ability, so while it doesn't say "you may", doing X is actually optional![1]

Rule: When a card says "Do X to do Y" or "You may do X to do Y", doing X is optional in both cases.

Q: If I discard a card that plays itself that way (e.g. Enchanted Objects, Break the Curse, etc.), do I play it as an extra card before or after playing Lumiere's extra character?

A: It depends. Those cards can only be played after you've finished resolving Lumiere's talent. But Lumiere's extra character can either be played immediately, or "banked" to be played later during your Play Cards phase. If you choose to play the extra character immediately, then the extra character will be resolved before Enchanted Objects, Break the Curse, etc. If you choose to "bank" the extra character, then you'll first need to resolve Enchanted Objects, Break the Curse, etc. and any other card reactions as well, e.g. Petals of the Rose, before being able to play the extra character.

Rule: During your Play Cards phase, you can play extra minions and actions at any time or not at all.

Rule: Extra cards can always be played immediately.

Rule: Check the Card Resolution Order.

With AEG's Smash Up sets[]

Q: I can play an extra "character". So I can only play a "character" card, not a "minion" card, correct?

A: Wrong, you can play a "character" or a "minion" card as the extra character without difference. "Character" and "minion" are two synonymous terms.

Rule: The word “character” is an exact synonym for “minion” in the other sets.

Questions on Mrs. Potts and Chip[]

Q: I draw a card, but it will bring my hand to more than ten cards, for example by discarding Discover the Library. Do I immediately discard down to 10 cards? Or do I stop drawing once I have exactly ten cards?

Q: If I discard a card that plays itself that way (e.g. Enchanted Objects, Break the Curse, etc.), do I play it as an extra card before or after drawing Mrs. Potts and Chip's card?

A: After, because those cards can only be played after you've finished resolving Mrs. Potts and Chip's talent.

Rule: Check the Card Resolution Order.

Questions on Enchanted Objects[]

Q: The card says "Special" so I can play it outside of my turn, right?

A: "Special" does not mean the card can be played out of turn. "Special" simply means that it's an ability that can be used when its condition is met. Whether it can be used out of turn, activated straight from your hand/discard pile, or if it can only be used when it's already in play (essentially being a synonym of Ongoing), it entirely depends on the wording. In the case of Enchanted Objects, the condition is "after you discard this card from your hand", this means that you can only activate it if you discard it from your hand, no matter whose turn it is. If you discard it from your hand outside your turn, you would indeed be able to play it out of turn, but only because it was discarded.

Rule: A Special ability will describe how it can be used.

Q: I don't get its ability. Can I only play this character after I discard it from my hand?

A: No. Characters with a Special ability can be played as a normal character without invoking their Special ability.

Rule: N/A

Q: When can this character be played as a Special? Only when I have cards in excess during the Draw 2 Cards phase? Only when I use an ability that has me discard a card?

A: You can play it after you discard it from your hand for any reason, whether it's because you have to discard down to 10, or because any ability (yours, another player's, or a base's) tells you to discard a card.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: This character can be played when it's discarded. If it is discarded from my deck or after a base scores, do I get to play it?

A: No, it can only be played after it is discarded from your hand! Being discarded from the deck or from a base isn't being discarded from your hand.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: I'm told to "discard a card to do X". If I discard this character, do I get to play it as an extra character before or after doing X?

A: The general answer is after, because Enchanted Objects can only be played "after" you've finished resolving card abilities that are in the middle of resolution. However, if "do X" is "play an extra card/character/action", it is possible to "bank" that extra card for a later use rather than playing it immediately, in which case you'll be able to play Enchanted Objects first before actually playing that extra card. Note that this is only possible if that extra card is indeed "bankable", i.e. it is your Play Cards phase, the extra card isn't about a specific card players can see, and the ability that says "discard a card to do X" isn't a Special ability and doesn't have a later effect that depends on the extra card being played.

Rule: Check the Card Resolution Order.

Rule: During your Play Cards phase, you can play extra minions and actions at any time or not at all.

Rule: Extra cards gained by a Special ability must be played immediately or not at all.

Rule: Extra cards gained outside of your Play Cards phase must be played immediately or not at all.

Rule: Extra cards that refer to a specific card must be played immediately or not at all.

Rule: You must play an extra card immediately or not at all if another part of the ability follows the extra play and depends on the extra card being played.

Q: During my Draw 2 Cards phase, I have more than ten cards in hand, so I discard Enchanted Objects and play it. Doing so allows me to reach or exceed the breakpoint of a base. Do we score the base immediately?

A: No, bases only score during the Score Bases phase, so you'll need to wait until the next Score Bases phase and check again if that base scores or not.

Rule: Outside the Score Bases phase, it doesn't matter how much power each player has on each base, they will only score if they meet the requirement during the Score Bases phase, and the Score Bases phase only.

Q: During my Draw 2 Cards phase, I have more than ten cards in hand, so I discard Enchanted Objects and play it. Doing so allows me to reach or exceed the breakpoint of a base. I get that the base doesn't score yet. When the next player's turn starts, do we score the base immediately or is that player allowed to play cards before it happens?

A: The base doesn't score until it's the Score Bases phase of a turn. So that player still has to go through their Start Turn phase and their Play Cards phase before we check if any base is ready to score.

I get that the next player is still able to take their Start Turn phase and their Play Cards phase to do things. If they do something that brings the total power on Enchanted Objects's base below the breakpoint, does the base still score?

A: No. You only check if a base is ready to score during the Score Bases phase of a player's turn.

Rule: Outside the Score Bases phase, it doesn't matter how much power each player has on each base, they will only score if they meet the requirement during the Score Bases phase, and the Score Bases phase only.

With AEG's Smash Up sets[]

Q: I manage to steal another player's Enchanted Objects, e.g. with Trade. If I discard it from my hand, it goes to the other player's discard pile, but who gets to play it as an extra character? Me or the other player?

A: You. You discarded it from your hand so you get to play it.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: So the rulebook says Copycat can copy any type of abilities, including Special. So if another plays an Enchanted Objetcs as a Special, I can copy the Enchanted Objetcs's ability and play Copycat, right? Same question about Wil Wheaton, Snuggly Bear, Argonaut, Fan, Shinobi, etc.

A: No, Copycat's ability is an on-play ability, which means you only resolve it if you play Copycat first. In your scenario, you invoke Copycat's ability while it's out of play and then use it to play Copycat, which isn't possible because you can only copy an ability by first playing Copycat. A Copycat's ability cannot be used to play the Copycat itself because playing it is required to invoke its copy ability in the first place.

Rule: An on-play ability happens when you play its card.

Questions on Be Our Guest[]

Q: Is there a limit to the number of cards in my hand?

A: Yes, the rules of the Smash Up: Disney Edition set are actually missing it, but there is a limit of ten cards though only during your Draw 2 Cards phase, which is when you draw two cards before the end of your turn. Rule: You wait until your Draw 2 Cards phase to discard down to 10; if your hand is bigger than 10 at other times of the game, that’s okay.

Q: An opponent plays this card on a base, so now I can use this talent when it's my turn, right?

A: No. Your opponent played the action, so they control it, and therefore the talent can only be used by them.

Rule: A play-on-base action doesn't give an ability to the base that any player can use.

Rule: A card's talent can only be used by that card's controller.

Q: I draw a card while I have ten cards in hand, for example because I used Mrs. Potts and Chip's talent or discarded Discover the Library.

Rule: You wait until your Draw 2 Cards phase to discard down to 10; if your hand is bigger than 10 at other times of the game, that’s okay.

Q: On the same turn, I discarded several cards, several at once (e.g. with Gaston) and/or a single card multiple times (e.g. using Belle, Beast, Lumiere, etc. on the same turn). How many cards do I draw with Be Our Guest? Only one? Or one per discarded cards?

A: Only one.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

With AEG's Smash Up sets[]

Q: If a card refers to an action "that can be played on a base" (e.g. Mechanic, Flank Attack), this one doesn't say "play on a base" so it cannot be targeted, correct?

A: Wrong, "Base modifier" and "Play on a base" are two synonymous phrases.

Rule: A card that says “Base/Character modifier” is the same as one that says “Play on a base/minion” in the other sets.

Q: How does this interact with the Disco Dancers' mechanic and Funky Town's ability?

A: It doesn't interact with them at all, because it says "Base modifier", which means that it is not a standard action.

Rule: Definition of "standard".

Questions on Break the Curse[]

Q: The card says "Special" so I can play it outside of my turn, right?

A: "Special" does not mean the card can be played out of turn. "Special" simply means that it's an ability that can be used when its condition is met. Whether it can be used out of turn, activated straight from your hand/discard pile, or if it can only be used when it's already in play (essentially being a synonym of Ongoing), it entirely depends on the wording. If you discard it from your hand outside your turn, you would indeed be able to play it out of turn, but only because it was discarded.

Rule: A Special ability will describe how it can be used.

Q: When can this action be played as a Special? Only when I have cards in excess during the Draw 2 Cards phase? Only when I use an ability that has me discard a card?

A: You can play it after you discard it from your hand for any reason, whether it's because you have to discard down to 10, or because any ability (yours, another player's, or a base's) tells you to discard a card.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: This action can be played when it's discarded. If it is discarded from my deck, do I get to play it?

A: No, it can only be played after it is discarded from your hand! Being discarded from the deck isn't being discarded from your hand.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: This action can be played when it's discarded from the hand. After it is played from the hand, it has to be discarded, so do I get to play it a second time? An infinite amount of time?

A: No, once you play it from your hand, it is no longer in it. You indeed have to discard it but since it isn't in your hand anymore, it doesn't count as being discarded from your hand.

Rule: Once you play a card, it is no longer in your hand.

Q: If I play Break the Curse and then play another character there afterward, does the new character get +1 power from Break the Curse?

A: No, it only increases the power of characters "currently there" at the time the card is played, and not the power of characters played afterwards.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: If I play Break the Curse and then move one of my characters to the targeted base. Does the character get +1 power from Break the Curse?

A: No, it only increases the power of characters "currently there" at the time the card is played, and not the power of characters played afterwards.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: If I play Break the Curse and then move one of my characters from the targeted base to another base. Does the character lose the +1 power from Break the Curse?

A: No, the power boost is granted as a definitive effect. The restriction to the base is only for when the card is played, so characters that got the boost still keep it if they are moved to a different base.

Rule: An effect “until Y” lasts until Y even if the card that caused it leaves play or moves away, or even if any precondition stops being true.

Q: I'm told to "discard a card/an action to do X". If I discard this action, do I get to play it as an extra action before or after doing X?

A: The general answer is after, because Break the Curse can only be played "after" you've finished resolving card abilities that are in the middle of resolution. However, if "do X" is "play an extra card/character/action", it is possible to "bank" that extra card for a later use rather than playing it immediately, in which case you'll be able to play Break the Curse first before actually playing that extra card. Note that this is only possible if that extra card is indeed "bankable", i.e. it is your Play Cards phase, the extra card isn't about a specific card players can see, and the ability that says "discard a card/an action to do X" isn't a Special ability and doesn't have a later effect that depends on the extra card being played.

Q: During my Draw 2 Cards phase, I have more than ten cards in hand, so I discard Break the Curse and play it. Doing so allows me to reach or exceed the breakpoint of a base. Do we score the base immediately?

A: No, bases only score during the Score Bases phase, so you'll need to wait until the next Score Bases phase and check again if that base scores or not. At that point Break the Curse's power boost would have already expired.

Rule: Outside the Score Bases phase, it doesn't matter how much power each player has on each base, they will only score if they meet the requirement during the Score Bases phase, and the Score Bases phase only.

With AEG's Smash Up sets[]

Q: This only works with "my characters". So it only works with "character" cards, not with "minion" cards, correct?

A: Wrong, it works with both "character" and "minion" cards. "Character" and "minion" are two synonymous terms.

Rule: The word “character” is an exact synonym for “minion” in the other sets.

Q: It gives +1 power to "my characters". Does it also give +1 power to a minion I own that don't control? I don't control it but I "own" it, so it's "my" minion, right?

A: No. "Your characters" are minions you control, whether or not you own them. A minion you own but don't control isn't yours.

Rule: "Your minion" means "a minion that you control".

Q: I play Break the Curse and boost my minions. If an opponent manages to take control of one of my minions there before Break the Curse expires (e.g. The Base Is Not Enough, Can Has Cheeseburger?), does the minion keep its boost?

A: Yes, Break the Curse gives the +1 power to all your minions there as a definitive effect, so the restriction that only your minions are affected only matters when Break the Curse is played. Afterwards, if the minion's controller changes the +1 power still remains applied to it until the end of the turn.

Rule: An effect “until Y” lasts until Y even if the card that caused it leaves play or moves away, or even if any precondition stops being true.

Q: I manage to steal another player's Break the Curse, e.g. with Trade. If I discard it from my hand, it goes to the other player's discard pile, but who gets to play it as an extra action? Me or the other player?

A: You. You discarded it from your hand so you get to play it.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: An opponent's Magic Ward is on a base where I have minions, can I play Break the Curse and boost them?

A: Sure. Magic Ward only prevents "play on a base" actions from being played there, but Break the Curse isn't played on a base, so Magic Ward does nothing to it.

Rule: Only "play on a base" actions are played on a base.

Q: How does this interact with the Disco Dancers' mechanic and Funky Town's ability?

A: - Diva can't copy it because it would already be directly affected by it.
- If Dancing King copies it onto a minion (it can be itself), that minion is considered as indirectly affected by the action and gets +1 power.
- If We are Family copies it, the minion it is on is considered as indirectly affected by the action and gets +1 power.
- Funky Town can't copy it because you need to be the one who played the action and so all your minions are already directly affected by it.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Questions on Discover the Library[]

In the case of Discover the Library, the condition is "after you discard this card from your hand", this means that you can only activate it if you discard it from your hand, no matter whose turn it is. If you discard it from your hand outside your turn, you would indeed be able to play it out of turn, but only because it was discarded.

Rule: A Special ability will describe how it can be used.

Q: I play this and end up with more than ten cards in hand, for example because I used Mrs. Potts and Chip's talent. Do I immediately discard down to 10 cards? Or did I have to stop drawing once I have exactly ten cards?

A: You draw cards normally, disregarding the limit. You don't discard any card until your Draw 2 Cards phase. At that point, you will indeed need to draw two cards and discard down to 10 if you have more than 10. That's the only moment where you must discard down to 10. At any other time, you keep your hand of cards.

Rule: You wait until your Draw 2 Cards phase to discard down to 10; if your hand is bigger than 10 at other times of the game, that’s okay.

Q: Do I discard the card among the two cards I drew?

A: You draw two cards and add them to your hand, then discard one card among all the cards in your hand.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Rule: If there are no limits, there are no limits.

Q: I'm told to "discard a card/an action to do X". If I discard this action, do I get to play it as an extra action before or after doing X?

A: The general answer is after, because Discover the Library can only be played "after" you've finished resolving card abilities that are in the middle of resolution. However, if "do X" is "play an extra card/character/action", it is possible to "bank" that extra card for a later use rather than playing it immediately, in which case you'll be able to play Discover the Library first before actually playing that extra card.

Q: I manage to steal another player's Discover the Library, e.g. with Trade. If I discard it from my hand, it goes to the other player's discard pile, but who gets to play it as an extra action? Me or the other player?

A: You. You discarded it from your hand so you get to play it.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: How does this interact with the Disco Dancers' mechanic and Funky Town's ability?

A: It doesn't interact with them at all, because it doesn't affect any minions in play and so its effect can't be copied.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Questions on Ever a Surprise[]

Q: The card says "Special" so I can play it outside of my turn, right?

A: "Special" does not mean the card can be played out of turn. "Special" simply means that it's an ability that can be used when its condition is met. Rule: A Special ability will describe how it can be used.

Q: Do I choose which characters to shuffle or are they picked randomly?

A: You choose which characters to shuffle.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Q: When can this action be played as a Special? Only when I have cards in excess during the Draw 2 Cards phase? Only when I use an ability that has me discard a card?

Rule: Once you play a card, it is no longer in your hand.

Q: It doesn't say to reveal the characters you shuffle into your deck, so I don't have to reveal them if I don't want to, right?

A: No. Discard piles are "public knowledge", so you can check which cards are in any player's discard pile at any time. If you take a card out of the discard pile, players are supposed to know what card was taken out. So, you should reveal them.

Rule: If you take a card out of the discard pile, show it to everyone.

Q: I'm told to "discard a card/an action to do X". If I discard this action, do I get to play it as an extra action before or after doing X?

With AEG's Smash Up sets[]

Q: It retrieves "characters". So it only works on "character" cards and not at all on "minion" cards, correct?

A: Wrong, it works on both "character" and "minion" cards. "Character" and "minion" are two synonymous terms.

Rule: The word “character” is an exact synonym for “minion” in the other sets.

Questions on Petals of the Rose[]

Q: An opponent plays this card on a base, so if I discard a card, I can rearrange the top two cards of my deck, right?

A: No. Your opponent played the action, so they control it, and therefore the action only addresses them and the ability must be interpreted from their point of view. So "you" means "they" (i.e. your opponent), "your hand/deck" means "their hand/deck", and "(you) place" means "they place".

Rule: A play-on-base action doesn't give an ability to the base that any player can use.

Rule: "You" on a minion, action or titan means the controller of the card.

Q: What happens if there's fewer than two cards in my deck?

A: You take what's left of your deck, then shuffle your discard pile to form a new deck and resume taking cards until you have two cards.

Rule: If you need to draw, reveal, search for or look at a card and your deck is empty, shuffle your discard pile and put it on the table face down—that’s your new deck; continue from there.

Q: What happens if there's exactly two cards in my deck?

A: You look at those two cards, rearrange them and set them down. That's your deck. You don't shuffle your discard pile to make a new deck.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.

Rule: If you need to draw, reveal, search for or look at a card and your deck is empty, shuffle your discard pile and put it on the table face down—that’s your new deck; continue from there.

Questions on This Provincial Town[]

Q: Do I have to play the extra character immediately or can I delay it until later and finish doing the rest of the card when I do it?

A: You have to play it immediately or not at all because the card does something else after the extra character is played. It cannot be saved for later.

Rule: You must play an extra card immediately or not at all if another part of the ability follows the extra play and depends on the extra card being played.

Q: Can I play This Provincial Town without having any characters in my hand? How do I prove that I don't have a character to play?

A: You can play This Provincial Town without playing a character and there's no reason to prove you can't do it. Actually, when you play This Provincial Town (during your Play Cards phase), it just grants you the possibility to play an extra character. You don't even have to play one if you don't want to.

Rule: Extra cards are always optional.

Q: I played This Provincial Town but then decided I don't want to play a character anymore. Do I still have to play one?

A: No. Even though it says "Play an extra character", you don't have to do it. Abilities that grant extra cards to play just increases the number of cards of that type that you can play for the turn, but they never force you to play one. This is an exception to the rule that tells you that you must follow a card's ability.

Rule: Extra cards are always optional.

Q: When is the power counter placed? Before resolving the character's ability or after?

A: After. You resolve the card in order, so you first play the character, then resolve its ability, and finally you place the +1 power counter on it.[2]

Rule: When you play a card, resolve the played card's ability immediately and completely.

Rule: Multiple parts of a card’s ability must be done in their stated order.

Q: If the minion is Sidelined Girlfriend and you place it in stasis, can you still place a +1 power counter on it?

A: No, cards in stasis cannot be affected by cards that do not explicitly state they work on cards in stasis.

Rule: Cards in stasis may not be affected by, or chosen as the target of, any ability that does not refer to stasis.

Q: How does this interact with the Disco Dancers' mechanic and Funky Town's ability?

A: - If Diva copies it, Diva is considered as indirectly affected by the action and has a +1 power counter placed on it.
- If Dancing King copies it onto a minion (it can be itself), that minion is considered as indirectly affected by the action and has a +1 power counter placed on it.
- If We are Family copies it, the minion it is on is considered as indirectly affected by the action and has a +1 power counter placed on it.
- With Funky Town, you can only copy it if you're the one who played the action and if it affects one of your minions, but if Funky Town does copy it, the minion is considered as indirectly affected by the action and has a +1 power counter placed on it.

Rule: Do exactly what the card says.
